These "friend or foe" IFF switch boxes were used in a variety of WWII combat aircraft including fighters Like P-51. This switch box measures 3 3/8" X 3 1/8" X 1 3/4" with a set of toggle switches controlling "recognition" colored lights on the exterior of the aircraft. Used when returning from a night mission where the airfield operators watched for an enemy aircraft sneaking in the darkness, the pilot would signal with a pre-arranged set of colors and/or a flashed code word on the lights.
